Sport Clubs at ISU, including our club, are currently undergoing major changes restricting activities.  Therefore, all information below is outdated and will be revised when we have more final information.  Overall, the club will still have a competitive team that can take trips to competitions, but outdoor recreational climbing trips are no longer allowed as official club events.  We will still be meeting to have presentations, seminars, and discussions and to meet others to form a climbing community as we have always done; we will just no longer be able to organize club climbing trips.

 

Why Become A Trip Leader

When you lead a weekend trip (three days or less) your transportation and camping fees are paid by the club. When you lead a trip that is four days or more, the club will pay 50% of your transportation and camping fees. You go on great trips for little or no money! Meet lots of new people and have a great leadership experience!

Leaders

How do I become a "Climbing Trip Leader" for the ISUMCC?

  • Be a dues paying member of the ISUMCC, in good standing.
  • Must have participated in at least two ISUMCC trips.
  • Must have passed the skills training program.
  • Pass Hands-On Leader Certification Test.
  • Receive the approval of the ISUMCC President and Advisor.

Benefits of being a Trip Leader:

  • When you lead a weekend trip (three days or less) your transportation and camping fees are paid by the club.
  • When you lead a trip that is four days or more, the club will pay 75% of your transportation and camping fees.
  • You go on great trips, basically for free!
  • Meet lots of new people.
  • Learn the skills necessary to teach others about climbing
  • Great leadership experience!

What does a Trip Leader Do?

  • Sign up for one of the trips listed on our trips page, or if you want to be original make up a new one.
  • In advance: with your Co-leader, arrange for camping, transportation (including who will drive the GSB vans), and get the guidebook and maps.
  • Trip weekend: with your Co-leader, make sure you have the club gear. Once at your destination, help set a few top ropes and GO CLIMB! Help beginners as needed, and go and have fun.
  • Ensure the safety of the set-up and the safety of your participants.
  • Make sure you return all the club gear.

Assistant Leaders

The assistant leader program is designed to prepare club members for the leadership exam. These are the rules and guidelines for this program.

Assistant leaders must:

  • Participate in at least two club climbing trips within the past two semesters (current and one prior) before becoming an assistant leader.
  • Participate in the skills training program.
  • Show a willingness to learn skills related to the leadership exam.
  • Show a willingness to help trip leaders.

Assistant leaders will only pay half price for the trips that they assistant lead on.

Assistant leaders may hold the position for a maximum of two semesters. Assistant leaders that do not take the leadership exam by the end of the second semester will no longer be eligible to assist on trips. If no test is offered within the allotted time, then the assistant leader can retain the position until a test is offered. Assistants that so not pass the leadership exam may retain their position for up to two more semesters. No person can be an assistant leader for more than four semesters total.

Assistant leaders attend trips on a voluntary basis, but available slots are based on trip needs. No more than two assistants will be used for every three leaders. More leaders must volunteer for a trip than assistant leaders.

Assistant leaders will retain their position based on 4/5-approval vote by the cabinet after their first trip as an assistant.
